We are very excited to be able to offer stem cell therapy at our Market Weighton hospital. Stem cell therapy works with the body’s own cells to help repair damaged tissues, reduce pain and maximise mobility. This regenerative medicine is used in pets suffering from joint diseases, soft tissue injuries and some neurological conditions.

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are unique cells that have the ability to divide into different types of cells and can support the regeneration of healthy tissue in the body. In veterinary treatment, the focus is on mesenchymal stem cells. This type of stem cell is found in some of the body’s fat tissue.

These cells are multipotent, meaning they can develop into a range of cell types when placed in the right environment. They also support healing by activating surrounding cells and regulating inflammation.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy begins by taking a small fat sample from within the abdomen under general anaesthetic. This is sent to an external laboratory and then processed to isolate the stem cells. Millions of your pet’s own stem cells are then grown. After around five weeks, these are ready for use and can be injected into the required areas.

Once administered, stem cells help to co-ordinate healing by:

  • Stimulating the regeneration of new healthy tissue, such as joint cartilage
  • Activating nearby stem cells
  • Releasing growth factors that accelerate repair
  • Significantly reducing inflammation
  • Protecting existing cells from damage
  • Regulating the immune system in the area.

What conditions can stem cell therapy be used in?

Stem cell therapy can be used in the management of:

  • Arthritis, both early and late stages
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Tendon and ligament injuries, such as cruciate tears
  • Chronic soft tissue injuries
  • Spinal conditions such as lumbosacral disease or spondylosis

Repeat treatment

Patients may require a top-up treatment after 1-3 years, depending on the severity of the condition. A sample of your pet’s stem cells are kept cryogenically frozen at the lab for future use.
